U.S. Picks Up top-20 Finishes at CX Worlds

(Feb. 1, 2015) – Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) and Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Cannondale p/b cyclocrossworld.com) recorded top-20 results in the men’s U23 race, while Jonathan Page (Shelburne, N.H./XcelLED/Fuji) earned the top elite men’s time for the U.S. on the final day of the 2015 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships Feb. 1 in Tabor, Czech Republic.

Owen’s 51:46 run, which placed 15th overall, trailed winner Michael Van Thourenhout’s (BEL) 49:55 pace by just one minute, 51 seconds, which was followed by Laurens Sweek (BEL) in 50:05 and Stan Godrie (NED) in 50:09.

“I had fun. It’s not the result I wanted, but I knew that coming in I wouldn’t be 100 percent based on just how I was building up for the year,” said Owen, who won the U23 Stars-and-Stripes jersey three weeks earlier. “Nationals was kind of a big goal for me, even though it’s a smaller race. Worlds, I just wanted to carry my form that I’m going to take into the road season and I’m going to take a little bit of a break. It was all in all a pretty good race. I made some mistakes at the beginning.”

Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Cannondale p/b cyclocrossworld.com) also earned a top-20 finish, placing 19th in 52:18, trailed by Andrew Dillman (Fairdale, Ky./Cyclocross Network Racing) in 53:32 for 25th, Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, Calif./ California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) in 53:52 for 28th, Grant Ellwood (Boulder/Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling) in 54:25 for 31st and Sam O'Keefe (Baltimore, Md./C3-Twenty20 Cycling) in 55:52 for 43rd.

Page chalked the best time in the elite men’s race, taking 23rd in 1:13:45. Mathieu van der Poel (NED) won the rainbow jersey in 1:09:12, while Wout van Aert (BEL) earned silver in 1:09:27 and Lars van der Haar (NED) took bronze in 1:09:29.

U.S. National Champion Jeremy Powers (Easthampton, Mass./Aspire Racing) finished in 1:15:30 for 32nd, Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Cyclocross Project 2015) crossed in 1:17:05 for 35th and James Driscoll (Park City, Utah/Raleigh-Clement) finished 50th four laps back. Stephen Hyde (Easthampton, Mass./Jam Fund/NCC) did not finish after getting caught up in a few wrecks in the first lap.
