USICX: Powers clinches men's title, women's crown in doubt


After a two-week hiatus, the United States International Cyclo-cross Calendar (USICX) resumed with a pair of races at the Chicago Cyclocross Cup New Year's Resolution in Bloomingdale, Ill. Despite strong winds and a muddy course with frozen patches, the riders rang in 2012 with great racing on Dec. 31, 2011 and Jan. 1, 2012. With only one race remaining on the calendar, only the women's champion is in doubt.
MEN
After finishing second toRyan Trebon (Bend, Ore./LTS-Felt) in both races,Jeremy Powers(Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha-Focus) clinched the top spot in the USICX men's standings. With one race remaining, Powers holds a 92-point advantage on Trebon. Trebon's pair of victories allowed him to overtake and open a 66-point cushion on Ben Berden (BEL/Ops Ale-Clement), who slipped into third. Jamey Driscoll (Winooski, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld) remains in fourth place, while Justin Lindine (New Salem, Mass./BikeReg.com-Joe's Garage) rounds out the top five.

WOMEN
Laura van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./C3 p/b Mellow Mushroom) remains atop theUSICX women's standingswith only one contest remaining. She holds a 40-point edge on Katerina Nash (CZE/Luna Pro Team).Meredith Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./California Giant-Specialized) sits in third place, 73 points behind Nash and 32 points ahead of Andrea Smith (Somerville, Mass./LadiesFirst Racing), who finished second and seventh in the two contests in Illinois. Sue Butler (Portland, Ore./Team River City Bicycles-Ridley) registered a third-place finish on Saturday before winning Sunday's competition to slide into fifth place, 10 points behind Smith.

COMING UP
The USICX wraps up with the 2012 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships at Badger Prairie Park in Madison, Wisc. The elite races, which will be streamed live, are slated for Sunday, Jan. 8. The U23 and Junior Men's races are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 7.
